I turned to see Max, butler at Marston Manor and right hand man to Astrid. "Oh erm ...right yes ..sorry.." I stuttered. "You took a wrong turn Miss Eadie, I understand. Let me point you in the right direction" Max said in a kind voice. I walked with Max back towards the main entrance hall of the house, Max walked in silence but I have never been good at silence so I proceeded to ask him questions. How long had he worked here? Where did he live? Did he have family close by? I was babbling on when Max stopped and turned to me. "Miss Eadie I have worked here a long time, in my time here I have learned not to ask too many questions and not to question the things I see happening around Marston Manor. This is an important piece of advice I am passing on to you. Please do ask me if you require anything and now if you excuse me I have a matter to attend to". Max finished and with that he turned and left. My head was spinning, the red door, the cellar and Max's odd comments. There were certainly things that didn't quite make sense.
I was still musing over these things the following day when Astrid called me to her office. She told me that there was to be guests visiting the following evening and that she would require my help choosing a dress. There wasn't time to go out shopping so I spent the rest of the morning calling in dresses from the dozens of look books I had in the small study I worked in. When the dresses arrived I made a final edit of five dresses; an Alaia, a Valentino, a Halston Heritage, a Dior and a Marchesa. Too much choice meant too much time wasting, something which Astrid hated to do. Astrid choose the red Valentino number after remarking that it was 'very fitting' for tomorrow night. I would have agreed but I still had no idea what tomorrow night was all about.....
